How to do Safe Man hour Calculations at the site!! Its so easy!!

Tutorial on Safe Man hour Calculations and lost time hours

safe man hour calculations

Today's post is all about the safe man hour calculations at the site. Safe Man-hours shall be calculated from 1st of every month to end of the month.

The man hours worked per month shall be calculated based on the formula:

Total Man hours Worked in a day = (No. of  Workmen worked in a day x No. of Man hours worked in a day ) +   O.T

O.T = (No of O.T hours x No of workmen on overtime)

Total man hours worked for the month = Sum of total man hours
worked in a day for the month.

Lets See An example for the Safe Man hour Calculations

If 10 workmen working for 8 hours on 1st day without overtime
Total Man hours Worked on 1st day = 10 x 8 = 80 hrs
If 15 workmen working for 8 hours on 2nd day without overtime
Total Man hours worked on 2nd day = 15 x 8 =120 hrs

.
.

If 50 workman working for 8 hours on 31st day without overtime
Total Man-hours worked on 31st day = 50x 8 = 400 hrs
Total man hours for this month = 80+120+.......................+400 (hrs)
                               = value

To Calculate Man hours lost :

Man hours lost by each and every workman shall be calculated and the cumulative shall be added.

For example:-

No of man-hour lost by one workman for the month = 5 hrs
No of man-hour lost by second workman for the month  =3 hrs
Total Man hours Lost = 8 hrs

To Calculate Cumulative Man hours Worked :

Cumulative man hours worked =

Cumulative Man hours worked for the previous month + Total Man hours worked for the present month.

Safety Precautions for Scaffolding & Safety Net while working in a Construction site !!

Safety Precautions for Scaffolding & Safety Net!!

Safety precautions for the Scaffolding
Scaffolding at Site

1. Safety Precautions while Working on  - SCAFFOLDING are:

Green Measures:
  • Install and use scaffolding accessories based on the manufacturer’s recommended procedures.
  • Place scaffolds on stable ground.
  •  Lock scaffold wheels when in use.
  • Remove tools or debris on scaffold platforms.
  • Equip all open sides and ends of scaffold platforms with proper guardrails, mid-rails, and toe boards.
  • Wear a hard hat when working on or under a scaffold.
  • Wear sturdy, non-slip shoes when working on a scaffold.
  • Remove anything placed on scaffolds at the end of the work shift.
  • Maintain at least a 10-foot distance between scaffolds and electric power lines.
  • Avoid striking scaffolds with materials or vehicles.
Red Measures:
  • Intermix scaffolds, frames, and components of different manufacturers.
  • Use scaffolds as storage for tools or materials
  • Move scaffolds while they’re in use or occupied.
  • Alter scaffolding accessories.
  • Use makeshift scaffolds like planks laid across concrete blocks or other materials.
  • Work on scaffolds when there’s a strong wind or storm.
  • Use ladders or other materials on top of scaffolds to increase their height.

2. Safety Precautions while Working on  - Safety Nets are:

Safety Precautions while Working on Safety Nets

Green measures:
  • Do ensure you use competent safety net rigging companies, with relevant experience.
  • Do ensure you use competent safety net riggers.
  • To ensure that methods of access for work at height have been properly assessed, and the safest method reasonably practicable has been chosen.
  • Do carry out a formal inspection if nets are in place for more than 7 days, or subjected to extreme weather conditions. A visual user inspection should be carried out prior to working above the safety nets.
  • Do ensure that all materials are secure before lifting/craning above a safety net.
  • Do ensure that a handover certificate is completed prior to allowing works above a safety net.
  • Do ensure that nets are struck prior to any hot works being carried out above.
  • Do report any damage to a safety net. Don’t tamper with or adjust any nets and attachment points.
  • Do ensure all falls into a safety net are reported to site management and Ensure the supervision of the loaded nets removal from service.
  • Don’t allow work above the net if it is positioned >2m from the working level.
Red Measures:

  • Don’t allow the use of nets unless there is evidence of appropriate inspection & maintenance regime and UV testing within the last 12 months.
  • Don’t allow the use of nets unless a competent person has verified there is sufficient clearance distance (rule of thumb no less than 3m).
  • Don’t allow work above nets without evidence that any repairs have been carried out by a competent person authorized by the manufacturer.
  • Don’t allow work above nets which don’t have serial numbers or labels.
  • Don’t attach nets to any structure without first confirming it has the capacity to deal with a minimum 6kN loading at a 45ยบ angle.
  • Don’t allow gaps >100mm unless exceptional circumstances dictate otherwise (in these cases not >225mm).
  • Don’t allow work above net systems that have been damaged or loaded.
  • Don’t allow work above the net if it is positioned >2m from the working level.

Safety Tips while working with the compressed gases

Safety Tips to be followed while working with the compressed gases at site!!!

Safety Introduction on compressed gases:

Compressed gases, including liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), are used extensively on construction sites and supply a valuable source of energy. Misuse, however, may end up in fires, serious accidents and injuries.

Main Safety points to be taken care :

  1. Treat all cylinders as full.
  2. Regularly inspect hoses, cylinders and valves for damage and wear and tear.
  3. The likes of Oxy/Acetylene cylinders should only be utilized by competent persons.

Points to be done from your side as the safety in charge:

  1. Keep cylinders far from the sun, artificial heat, flammable materials, corrosive chemicals, etc.
  2. Do not smoke in vicinity.
  3. If a cylinder catches fire, then call the fire health brigade. Cool the cylinder with water spray as long as its  safe to do so.
  4. Always have fire extinguishers located within reasonable proximity to any hot work being carried out.
  5. Use hot work permits if appropriate.
  6. Ensure everyone knows fire procedures including alarm signal, evacuation routes, assembly area, and proper use of fire extinguishers (including types!).
  7. A void damage to cylinder valves and fittings. Don’t use then as carrying aids. Open valves slowly and shut sufficiently to chop gas supply – don't use excessive force.
  8. Always secure acetylene cylinders in upright position. Ensure all cylinders are stored so that they can't  fall or roll.
  9. Consider manual handling of cylinders – they're heavy! Use a trolley for full size cylinders or get assistance.
  10. Always unload cylinders from lorries, vans, etc, by fitting – not by dropping/ sliding.
  11. Transport cylinders in vehicles in vehicles with good ventilation – ensure relevant signs (compressed gases) are clearly displayed on vehicles.
