Safety Tips while working with the compressed gases

Safety Tips to be followed while working with the compressed gases at site!!!

Safety Introduction on compressed gases:

Compressed gases, including liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), are used extensively on construction sites and supply a valuable source of energy. Misuse, however, may end up in fires, serious accidents and injuries.

Main Safety points to be taken care :

  1. Treat all cylinders as full.
  2. Regularly inspect hoses, cylinders and valves for damage and wear and tear.
  3. The likes of Oxy/Acetylene cylinders should only be utilized by competent persons.

Points to be done from your side as the safety in charge:

  1. Keep cylinders far from the sun, artificial heat, flammable materials, corrosive chemicals, etc.
  2. Do not smoke in vicinity.
  3. If a cylinder catches fire, then call the fire health brigade. Cool the cylinder with water spray as long as its  safe to do so.
  4. Always have fire extinguishers located within reasonable proximity to any hot work being carried out.
  5. Use hot work permits if appropriate.
  6. Ensure everyone knows fire procedures including alarm signal, evacuation routes, assembly area, and proper use of fire extinguishers (including types!).
  7. A void damage to cylinder valves and fittings. Don’t use then as carrying aids. Open valves slowly and shut sufficiently to chop gas supply – don't use excessive force.
  8. Always secure acetylene cylinders in upright position. Ensure all cylinders are stored so that they can't  fall or roll.
  9. Consider manual handling of cylinders – they're heavy! Use a trolley for full size cylinders or get assistance.
  10. Always unload cylinders from lorries, vans, etc, by fitting – not by dropping/ sliding.
  11. Transport cylinders in vehicles in vehicles with good ventilation – ensure relevant signs (compressed gases) are clearly displayed on vehicles.
